Reishi Mushroom FAQs

Reishi mushroom, also known as Ganoderma lucidum or ling zhi, holds a special place in Chinese medicine as the 'mushroom of immortality.' It's cherished for its ability to support a healthy immune system, promote a balanced stress response and enhance sleep quality. Reishi is regarded as a Shen tonic, calming and balancing the spirit. Its benefits extend to strengthening vital organs like the Heart, Kidneys, Lungs and Liver, making it a versatile herb that supports overall well-being.
Reishi is rich in beta-glucans and over 100 distinct varieties of polysaccharides, which play a crucial role in supporting immune function. Additionally, it contains triterpenes, compounds responsible for its bitter taste and potent medicinal properties. These triterpenes are extracted through dual extraction methods involving ethanol and hot water, ensuring comprehensive benefits. Reishi's versatility lies in its ability to address a range of health concerns, from immune support to cardiovascular health and stress management.
Our reishi is carefully sourced from the Dabie Mountains in China, following the traditional Dì Dào (地道) approach. This means it's grown in the wilderness, dual-extracted for full-spectrum benefits, and cultivated on wild oak trees. We focus on the fruiting body of the mushroom, ensuring potency and authenticity. The meticulous sourcing process ensures that you receive the best reishi mushroom powder for optimal health benefits.
Reishi offers a myriad of benefits backed by both traditional wisdom and modern research. From supporting immune function and cardiovascular health to managing stress and promoting restful sleep, reishi is truly a multifaceted adaptogen. Its immune-modulating properties help strengthen the body's defences, while its ability to calm the mind and spirit makes it a valuable tool for overall well-being. Whether you're seeking relief from allergies, stress, or looking to enhance your vitality, reishi can be a powerful ally.
Our reishi supplement comes in convenient capsule and powdered forms. If you prefer the powdered option, start with a small dose, such as 1/4 teaspoon, and gradually increase as needed. This adaptogen can be added to hot water for a traditional tea or incorporated into various recipes, such as raw chocolate or savoury dishes. Tune in to your body's cues and adapt your dosage accordingly to maximise the benefits of our reishi supplement for your unique health journey.
Most healthy humans can reap the benefits of reishi, however, it is always recommended to speak to a healthcare provider, naturopath or herbalist before introducing a new supplement into your diet. Reishi has a calming effect and will relax the central nervous system, so it is particularly helpful to anyone who suffers from insomnia, anxiety and general restlessness. This potent medicinal mushroom can be particularly effective for menopause if anxiety is present and functions as a calming anchor for mothers during pregnancy and birth.
Reishi's rich history dates back to ancient Chinese texts, where it was revered for its tonifying effects on the Heart, Liver, and immune system. Known as the 'mushroom of immortality,' Reishi symbolised longevity and spiritual cultivation in Taoist traditions. Emperors and royalty once reserved it for exclusive use, highlighting its esteemed status in Chinese culture. Today, reishi continues to be celebrated for its profound impact on health and vitality, embodying the timeless wisdom of traditional herbalism.

Calm and Collected

"I tried Reishi for a short period a couple of years ago but it wasn't until I took up the practice fully this year that it made the difference. Now I drink it every night and it keeps me so much calmer and more able to manage emotions. I sleep so much better and have much less difficulty falling to sleep when I use it. Reishi has been a total game changer for my sleep routine and consistent use helps to keep me calm and collected. I love it! Oh and I got a SF spoon in a recent order. I never realised more joy could be had stirring my tonics!"

Daily Staple

"I have been taking Reishi daily for almost a year and a half. This is a wonderful mushroom! I have epilepsy, and have never experienced full seizure control using pharmaceutical medication in 20 years. I have also suffered severe side effects which have accumulated over the years. I have now managed to wean myself off all meds, and take Reishi and a combination of other Superfeast products. It has been a lot of trial and error as my system is super sensitive; but Reishi has been one I have handled incredibly well from the start. I take it every day in combination with Shen, and I am so much calmer, I sleep about 8 hours a night uninterrupted. The chronic anxiety I used to battle doesn't exist anymore. Life is much better with this mushroom!"

Q&A

Hi, I used Reishi during my pregnancy, can I continue while breastfeeding? Is it beneficial for bub through breastmilk and in what way? Thank you!
Hey Laura, thanks for your question and this is such a special time for you! Reishi is a deeply nourishing tonic herb that’s traditionally used to support a calm and resilient nervous system, emotional balance, immune health, and overall wellbeing. It can be especially supportive in the postpartum period, helping to steady the nervous system and gently replenish the body during times of change, and it is considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. While there isn’t sufficient data to confirm how specific compounds transfer to a baby via breastmilk, it’s likely that some of the broader immunological benefits of the herbs are shared through maternal consumption. I hope this answers your question! Sending lots of love during this time, SF xx
At what age can kids take reishi?
Hey Amanda, Yes, Reishi can be had by children. Dosage-wise: 1/16-1/8th tsp (a pinch if that's easier) for very small children 1/8-1/2 tsp for children 4 - 12 years. 1/4-1tsp, an adult dose, for children over 12. Enjoy, let us know if you have any other questions, Mark
In terms of measuring teaspoons used for baking/cooking, how much 200mg of reishi powder? Is it a quarter teaspoon?
Hi Em! Sorry for the confusion regarding our dosage. We recommend 1/4 - 1 heaped tsp for all of our herbs, Reishi included. Generally we say start low on 1/4 - 1/2 tsp and build up to a 1 heaped tsp dose :) x Sam
Can you take Lions Mane as well as Reishi
It is completely fine to take Lion's Mane and Reishi and even combine them together into their own blend. The herbs work in synergy with one another and you can take your herbs in any combination or timeframe that suits your daily rhythm and flow. x Sam
Morning, just wanted to ask what is the percentage of polysaccharides in your Reishi powder.
Hey Cam, SuperFeast Reishi usually clocks in with an average around 30-35% beta-glucans, however we do not test this frequently. As we are a small company, we prefer to allocate our resources to testing for heavy metals, pesticides, microbials and aflatoxins, rather than the above mentioned constituents. So at this time I am unable to provide you with any extract numbers. When we first receive a new crop to the processing facility it gets tested regularly to ensure the active ingredient percentages are above the minimums set by the Chinese Pharmacopeia for therapeutic effect. Each batch of our Reishi will vary a little, so we could never claim specific percentages as it differs from batch to batch due to seasonality. The other reason we don't promote our polysaccharide/triterpene levels is because we believe there are MANY reasons these mushrooms work, and we try not to get bogged down by individual compounds. As we know, the immune system is activated by many components in mushrooms. Beta-glucans are just one. Other constituents include but are not limited to alpha-glucans, ergothioneines, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory sterols, lipids, glycosides, and mycoflavonoids—many of which work synergistically to optimise health. The above reasons are why we only state our mushroom extracts as full spectrum concentrated 10:1 extract powders, with no indicates on the assay of polysaccharides or beta-glucans, or tripertenes. I hope this helps, and you understand our stand point. x Sarah
I'm going overseas for two months and am already concerned about not having my seven mushroom hot chocolate every morning. The 100g jars are going to all too much weight to my luggage allowance. Is it possible for you to supply single, 100g packets of Turkey Tail, Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga, Cordyceps, Shitake and Mason's Mushrooms?
Hey David, so glad you're loving your Mushroom hot choccy! We have a mushroom blend powder called Mason's Mushrooms which may suit your needs for this trip. It is available in a 250g so wouldn't take up all your precious luggage space. Have the best trip! x Sarah
Do you ever use Japanese Reishi? Having used it for about 7 years I have always found it superior to the Reishi from China.
Hey Cam, Here at SuperFeast we specialise in Daoist Tonic herbs and therefore choose to place our focus on sourcing herbs from various mountain regions in China via a practice known as Di Dao. Our Reishi is sourced from the Dabie Mountains of China. To learn more about our sourcing practices please check out our blog on this subject via the link below: https://www.superfeast.com.au/blogs/superblog/china-di-tao-source-herbs?_pos=1&_sid=7297fc505&_ss=r x SF Team
Can you mix Reishi with a coffee and still have the benefits in the drink?
Hey Anita, Our herbs are fully extracted and can be added to any hot or cold food or beverage of choice - including coffee. This will not affect you receiving the medicinal benefits! Adding tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms to coffee (and other caffeinated beverages) may help to soften the undesirable side effects caffeine has on the adrenals and nervous system. x SF Team
Taking reishi on blood thinners? Hi SuperFeast Team. I happily use Reishi myself and would like to offer some for my yoga teacher, however she is on blood thinners. I remember a while ago coming across this info on google: Reishi should not be used if you are taking anticoagulants like warfarin or are scheduled to have surgery as it may increase the risk of bleeding. Reishi may also cause your blood pressure to drop and should be avoided if you are taking antihypertensive medications. Any opinions?
It is challenging for us to make herbal recommendations when the individual is taking pharmaceutical medications as there are so many variables and the chance of a possible contraindication. Blood thinners are especially tricky as they operate within a very narrow therapeutic index, with even the smallest dose interference having the potential to create rather undesirable effects. We advise she checks in with her healthcare provider for more support as they will have a deeper understanding of her full health/medical history. x SF Team
Hi there, from a very general perspective, how young could a baby/toddler be to start giving them a small amount of this in a bottle?
Hey Ashely, We generally suggest introducing the herbs from 4 years and starting with 1/8th of a teaspoon- so just a pinch. x SF Team
